Switzerland to Milan Friday 10 February 1893 |
|
Breakfast today was at 8 am and then the pilgrims made their way to the Cathedral of St Leodegar where a ‘Grand Organ Concert’ was being held in their honour from 9-10 am. There was a short time for sight-seeing before they left Lucerne at 11 am.
The train had to travel through the Alps and through the St Gothard’s Tunnel. The railway rose like a corkscrew on one of the tunnel and descended on the other in a similar way. The train was the largest to have ever passed through the tunnel. It had more than twenty carriages and another engine had to be put at the back although there were already two at the front. It entered the swiss side of the tunnel and emerged eighteen minutes later on the Italian side at 6 30 pm. Here the pilgrims had to change trains and have their luggage examined. While this was being done they enjoyed a comfortable dinner in the railway restaurant before continuing on their way to Milan, arriving at 10 pm. |
